Ministry of Communications and Damascus University sign an MOU Concerning Information and Communications Technologies

March 27th - The Ministry of Communications and Technology and Damascus University concluded a memorandum understanding in the areas of communication and information technology in order to promote the development of these technologies within Syria.

Minister of Communications and Technology Dr. Imad Sabouni stated that the ministry is working to train its employees in order to improve their performance in a number of sectors and fields. He pointed out that the creation of a joint Syrian-Indian Center of Excellence constituted an important first step in improving the quality of IT in Syria by offering high-level training courses, and that the ministry is putting all its capabilities at the disposal of M.A. students and joint research projects.

For his part, Damascus University President Wael Mualla said that the university aspires to transform the IT Engineering faculty into a distinguished center of IT and Communications research through cooperation with various specialized agencies, including the Ministry of Communications and technologies. The memorandum, in his words, opens new horizons of cooperation between the university and the ministry.

In accordance with the memorandum, the ministry will undertake to train students from Damascus University’s engineering faculty in government laboratories, using its equipment, and provide joint supervision over student projects of common interest. The agreement will also enable employees, teachers and university students to train in the Syrian-Indian Center of Excellence for IT (which belongs to the national body for network services). Damascus University will provide this center with the necessary groups of trained graduates from its IT Engineering faculty in order to smooth its functioning within the framework of programs to be determined by the two parties. They will also issue a joint training certificate to those from the IT faculty at DU training at the center and participation in reviewing the training plans in the training centers among the ministry and its related agencies.

Moreover, the two parties agreed to create a joint M.A. degree in training and specialization in the area of Information and Communications Technology at Damascus University in cooperation with foreign universities and institutes. All parties committed to support this M.A. program , as conditions permit. In addition, a technology incubator focused on information and communications technology will be established at Damascus University located at the IT faculty, with assistance from the Ministry of Communications and Technology.
